Heartbleed bug, explained

I am a big fan of the XKCD Comic strip.  I therefore would prefer you visit the comic (you know, page hit counts and all that fun stuff) to see his explanation.

For those incapable of clicking, or simply too lazy, here is the explanation per his comic:

Suddenly, it all makes sense!

New definition for CMS

Also known as “How to ensure you will NOT get the applicants you want“.

I have a predefined search for a job site that sends me emails for jobs that fit a certain criteria.  It’s my way of keeping a pulse on what’s out there in the way of employment and doesn’t necessarily mean I’m looking for new employment.

Long story short, I was looking at a particular job posting and it made me scratch my head.  Now that I think about it, perhaps this is why they have reposted this job already.  This particular job has the following listed:

The successful candidate will have experience in grant writing; excellent written and oral communications as well as a command of various operating systems and languages to include: Windows 2008 Server, SQL Server, Linux Server, Windows 7, Mac OS X, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office Suite, JavaScript, PHP, HTML, CSS and CMS (preferably WordPress or JQuery). The candidate should have experience with PC Imaging, troubleshooting Server hardware, workstation hardware, printers and SMART Boards.

Now, perhaps it’s just me, and I’m by no means an English major, but when I see CMS (preferably WordPress or JQuery) I think “hmm, they think JQuery is a CMS?”.  Now, I don’t know about you, but I start to question the quality of the institution at this point and think “Is this really a place I want to work?”.  It would be like applying for an Instructional Technology position where you have to mail a physical copy of your resume in order to be considered for the position.  What are they doing?  Trying to get out of the stone and chisel age and into the chalkboard and chalk age?

CSS Genius at work.

And no, it’s not me.  Someone sent me a link to Matthew James Taylor’s “Equal Height Columns with Cross Browser CSS” post.  It’s a really smooth way to get equal height columns with different backgrounds working smoothly.

Since reading this first post, I’ve spent several hours reading through what he has on his site; some if it’s quite ingenious and I must say I’m quite jealous that I haven’t come up with some of the ideas myself.  And the best part of it all, it’s all there for download and use… not that an intelligent person could scrape the CSS and HTML to replicate what he’s doing anyhow, but it’s nice to know he’s willing to share.  So I encourage to go off and learn, be inspired.  I know I’m inspired and looking at doing a redesign based off of what I’ve read so far.  My hat’s off to you Matthew James Taylor.
